There is evidence of a number of schools in the parish over the past 200 tears. In the Askamore area, There was one at the top of Mill Hill, on Tompkins land. Part of the walls may still be seen. It was later occupied as a dwelling by a family named Drew. There was also an old school building at Knockamota, near Butlers cottage which served the community after the closure of the school at mill hill. There was another school house at the top of Askamore old graveyard. This was replaced in the 1940s by what has now become the Community Centre .In 1853, both Knockamota and Askamore were listed as National schools, in the Griffith valuation lists. Knockamota school was replaced by Ballyellis N.S in 1945, was built by Mr Thos Brennan, Building Contractor, Carnew.
